The Pontypool junior parkrun celebrates 10 years of promoting fitness and fun for kids in South Wales
Torfaen: Can you believe it? The junior parkrun in Pontypool just hit its 10-year mark! They celebrated over the Christmas period, and it was all about getting kids in South Wales moving and having fun.
This event is part of a global initiative that’s all about free, friendly runs for kids aged four to 14. It’s organized by volunteers who really care about making it a great experience.
One young runner shared how much fun it is. They said the volunteers are super nice and don’t mind how fast or slow you are. Plus, it’s a great place to make friends. How cool is that?
They even mentioned running together every week, sometimes pushing for a personal best, and other times just chatting and enjoying the run. It’s all about staying fit and having a blast.
These 2km junior parkruns happen every Sunday morning, not just in the UK but also in Ireland and Australia. It’s part of a huge community of over 10 million people worldwide.
Last May, a survey showed that most parents felt junior parkrun really boosts their kids’ confidence. And three out of four kids said they feel happy when they join in.
Deb Clarke, the event director, was thrilled to have some of the original volunteers at the 10th-anniversary celebration. She said it was a bit emotional and really special.
Deb emphasized that it’s all about having fun, not racing. They celebrate every milestone, whether it’s for runners or volunteers, and it’s a great way to kick off a Sunday morning.
She also praised the volunteers, saying it’s a joy to see the kids enjoying themselves. Many volunteers don’t even have kids in the event; they just love being part of the fun.
