A remote Scottish island seeks a ranger with free housing and a salary, but there’s a catch for those interested in the unique opportunity
Tarbet: There’s a unique job opportunity on Handa Island, located in the northwestern part of Scotland. They’re looking for a new ranger, and guess what? They’re offering free housing and a salary of £25,600 for a six-month contract starting in March.
Even though no one lives there permanently, the island gets about 8,000 visitors each year. People come to enjoy the breathtaking views and to see the amazing wildlife, including birds, whales, and dolphins. Plus, a small group of volunteers will be around to lend a hand.
But here’s the thing: the job isn’t for someone who wants total solitude. The ad says they want someone who’s comfortable in a “highly sociable” setting. So, if you’re dreaming of escaping to a quiet life, this might not be the gig for you. You’ll also need to be okay with working outdoors and with animals. The only real requirement? A valid driving license and a vehicle.
Interestingly, the role can be shared between a couple or friends, which is a nice option. However, living on the island does come with some challenges. You’ll have to do laundry, shop, and swap out gas bottles in the nearby village of Scourie, but that’s only once a week.
While it sounds like a dream job, the ranger has some serious responsibilities. They’ll need to keep an eye on the local seabird population, maintain the buildings, and ensure safety on the island. This is especially important since Handa Island is home to one of Europe’s largest seabird breeding colonies.
Getting to the island is easy; you can take a pedestrian ferry from Tarbet, which is about three miles north of Scourie. There’s even a free public car park at the pier. The scenery is stunning, with cliffs that rise 400 feet above the sea, offering views of minke whales, dolphins, seals, and even the occasional orca.
Puffins are a big draw for many visitors, making the island a popular spot. Applications for the position closed last night, and interviews are set to happen next week. Exciting times ahead!
