A serious injury at a Glasgow shipyard prompts an investigation into safety practices
Glasgow: So, there’s been a bit of a scare at the shipyard. A contractor got seriously hurt while working on the new Navy vessel, HMS Glasgow. It’s the first of eight Type 26 frigates being built, and they’re fitting it out at Scotstoun on the Clyde.
BAE Systems has a massive contract worth £4.2 billion for these ships. But things took a turn when a painter fell down some stairs and ended up breaking his back. Ouch!
The Health and Safety Executive jumped in to investigate right after the incident. Apparently, there were already some fire safety concerns raised by the staff working on the ship last week.
A source mentioned that the painter fell while going down the stairs, which were later blocked off. BAE Systems said they’re all about safety and are working with the contractor’s employer to help him recover.
They’ve notified the Health and Safety Executive and are cooperating with the investigation. But they can’t say much more until it wraps up.
Just last month, some workers were hesitant to board the ship because they were worried that not everyone could hear the fire alarm. After addressing those concerns, they agreed to do a fire safety drill.
But during that drill, one person was missing because they didn’t hear the alarm. It’s a bit concerning, to say the least!
