Grangemouth refinery issues redundancy letters to potentially 500 workers. It transitions to import terminal after significant losses reported.
The refinery will become an import terminal instead. Petroineos, who owns it, reported big losses. This change means about 500 people might lose their jobs. They started giving out redundancy letters, and it seems only a few are forced, though.
Sharon Graham from Unite is not happy. She called the closure shameful and pointless. She thinks there’s a plan for Grangemouth’s future. She says the UK and Scottish governments are not helping.
She believes Grangemouth could make sustainable jet fuel. She mentioned the Heathrow expansion needing SAF. Grangemouth could produce that fuel. She wonders why the government doesn’t see this. She wants the government to challenge Petroineos for the country’s sake.
Graham insists Petroineos should switch to SAF and biofuels. If they don’t, the government should invest. SAF demand will greatly increase, she stated. She added the market is certainly there. Unite will keep fighting for the refinery and the jobs.
Petroineos said Grangemouth will be a fuel hub soon. This hub ensures Scotland gets its fuel. The change from refinery to terminal is happening and they expect it to take several months.
Completely dismantling the refinery will take about five years. The new terminal will operate during this process. Both governments have been asked for their opinions.
