Residents of Paignton are upset over plans to replace a historic pub with a car park
Paignton: There’s a lot of buzz in town about the Inn on The Green. People are really upset about plans to tear it down for a car park. It’s not just any pub; it’s a piece of our history.
Local MP Steve Darling is also speaking out. He thinks it would be a real shame to lose such a landmark. He mentioned that while there have been some cool developments nearby, turning this spot into a car park doesn’t seem like the best idea.
The pub has been closed since October, and the Fragrance Group, which built two new hotels on the seafront, wants to replace it. They say the new car park will help visitors to the hotels and local attractions.
But folks around here are not so sure. They feel the Inn on The Green is steeped in local history. It was originally built in the 1700s and transformed into a pub in the late 1800s. It’s a connection to our past that many don’t want to lose.
Some locals are torn. While they miss the old pub, they also see the need for new developments to boost tourism. The new car park could help with the influx of visitors, but it feels like a bittersweet trade-off.
People have until the end of the month to voice their opinions before the council makes a decision. It’s a big moment for Paignton, and everyone’s hoping their voices will be heard.
