Bristol: This city has stunning views, like the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the Harbourside. People love to sit on benches and enjoy the sights.

Recently, a new bench was put up in Shirehampton. It faces a derelict building on Station Road, which is set for demolition. This odd placement caught the attention of many on social media.

I grew up in the northwest of Bristol and visited Shirehampton often. It’s a lovely area, especially Park Hill, which feels more like a village than a city. The new bench is right outside a crumbling horticultural nursery.

Curious about the bench, I decided to check it out myself. My first thought was, “Why would anyone put a bench here?” It seems strange to sit in front of a rundown site waiting for housing development.

The first time I saw the bench, I laughed. It looked so out of place. The second time, I laughed again. At least it brought some joy, even if it was for the wrong reasons.

The view from the bench is not great. The old Nurserymen Florists building is falling apart, and there are rotting greenhouses nearby. The area isn’t even properly gated off, adding to the odd charm.

Surrounding the bench is mostly residential housing. There’s a closed toilet block and a couple of shops, but that’s about it. The paving around the bench looks brand new, which feels out of character for Shirehampton.

It’s puzzling why the bench was placed here. The planned development for 18 homes and three apartments hasn’t even been approved yet. It makes you wonder if the bench was meant for a different spot.

If you enjoy looking at decaying greenhouses, this bench might be perfect for you. Otherwise, the view leaves much to be desired.

As for comfort, the bench is just fine. It’s like any other bench, but instead of a nice view, you’re staring at a rundown site. I’ve jokingly renamed it the ‘Bench of Dreams’ after my visit.

This bench has faced a lot of ridicule online, and I can see why. It’s truly a strange addition to the area.
