HMPV cases are rising in the UK, with symptoms often resembling a common cold
London: The human metapneumovirus, or HMPV, is making headlines again. Reports from China show cases are climbing as winter sets in. The country’s CDC is urging folks to stay healthy and keep up hygiene practices. They’ve also dismissed rumors about hospitals being overwhelmed and fears of another pandemic.
In the UK, health officials noted that positive HMPV cases were at 2.42% as of early December. Just a few weeks later, that number jumped to 4.5%. It seems like HMPV is following its usual seasonal pattern here.
Experts want to reassure everyone that HMPV isn’t like Covid. This virus has been around for decades. Professor Sir Andrew Pollard from the University of Oxford explained that HMPV is a common respiratory virus first identified about 25 years ago.
It mainly affects babies and the elderly, sometimes leading to hospital visits. But for most people, it just brings on cold-like symptoms. Professor Pollard mentioned that it’s one of many viruses that pop up in winter, adding to the NHS’s seasonal challenges.
So, what are the common symptoms of HMPV? They include cough, runny nose, fever, and even asthma flare-ups. More severe cases can lead to lung inflammation, especially in young kids.
Now, if you’re wondering how HMPV stacks up against a regular cold, the NHS says cold symptoms usually develop gradually and can last a week or two. Sneezing, a blocked nose, and feeling tired are typical signs of a cold.
Dr. Conall Watson from the UK Health Security Agency pointed out that HMPV is a common winter infection. Most people catch it by age five and can get it again later in life. To help prevent spreading it, regular hand washing and proper cough etiquette are key.
If you’re feeling under the weather with a high temperature or cough, it’s best to limit contact with others, especially those who are more vulnerable. With various viruses circulating, including the flu, wearing a face mask when out and about is still a good idea.
