Plans are underway to replace a historic pub with a new apartment complex
Walsall: So, there’s this old pub called the New Navigation Inn that’s been sitting empty for a while. Plans are in the works to tear it down and put up a four-storey apartment block instead. If everything goes through, we could see nine one-bedroom and nine two-bedroom apartments, plus a shared courtyard and a rooftop terrace. Sounds pretty neat, right?
This spot is right by the Walsall Canal, which is a lovely area. It’s part of the Walsall Locks Conservation Area, so it’s got some history. The canal has a few locks that lead up to the town center, and to the north, it connects with another canal. It’s a nice little area for a stroll.
Now, the pub used to be a place where boatmen would stop for a drink after a long day. It was a community hub until it closed down during the pandemic. The building is in pretty rough shape, though, and there are concerns it might be a hazard for people walking by.
The folks behind the plans, Redstar Estate Ltd, want to keep the access from Green Street, which leads to a new housing estate nearby. The architects say this project could really spruce up the area and make it safer and more inviting.
They believe that turning this neglected site into something new will help improve the look of the neighborhood. Plus, it could bring some life back to the area, which has seen better days. It’s a chance to make something good out of a building that’s been left to fall apart.
