Many drivers still misinterpret Highway Code rules about pedestrian crossings, risking safety.
Cardiff: A motoring expert is reminding drivers about a key Highway Code rule. Many still get it wrong, even after three years. Select Car Leasing highlights that changes were made to protect pedestrians.
In 2022, the Highway Code was updated to enhance safety for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders. It introduced a new hierarchy of road users, prioritizing those most at risk.
Drivers and cyclists must yield to pedestrians crossing or waiting at junctions. This is a crucial rule that many still misunderstand, according to Graham Conway, managing director at Select Car Leasing.
He explained that if a driver turns into a junction while a pedestrian is crossing, they must give way. Ignoring this can lead to serious consequences, including fines and penalty points.
The Highway Code clearly states that traffic must yield to pedestrians at junctions. If pedestrians are crossing, they have priority over turning vehicles.
This rule also applies to cyclists, who must let pedestrians cross before proceeding. Drivers must give way at zebra crossings and parallel crossings, which include bike lanes.
A recent RAC poll showed that many UK drivers still ignore these rules. Only 23% of drivers said they always prioritize pedestrians at junctions.
Conway emphasized that if drivers argue with pedestrians in the road, they are likely in the wrong. It’s vital for drivers to align their behavior with the Highway Code to improve pedestrian safety.
