Major retailers recall Amika shampoo due to potential microbiological risks affecting customers’ health
London: So, there’s been a bit of a scare with Amika’s Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant shampoo. It’s been pulled from shelves because it didn’t meet safety standards. The recall affects products made in 2023 and 2024.
This shampoo is pretty recognizable with its pink patterned bottle. It’s part of the Shine-O-Sphere collection, which also includes a hair mask and gloss spray.
Retailers like TK Maxx and online stores such as Cult Beauty and Sephora have had to recall the shampoo after selling it between April and December 2024. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) issued a warning saying the product could pose a microbiological risk, possibly changing in smell and causing irritation due to a bacterium called P.Gergoviae.
Amika has clarified that this recall only affects this specific shampoo and not any of their other products. They mentioned in a release that they’ve been keeping an eye on feedback about changes in smell and occasional irritation. Thankfully, there haven’t been any serious health issues reported from using it.
It turns out the recall started after they found that some batches from a third-party manufacturer didn’t meet Amika’s quality standards, leading to contamination with that pesky P.Gergoviae bacterium, according to Chronicle Live.
They’re urging anyone who has the shampoo to stop using it right away, even if it seems fine. Amika reassured customers that, after consulting with an independent toxicology group, they believe the product doesn’t pose a serious health risk to healthy individuals. However, those with weakened immune systems or broken skin might be more at risk.
