Fiji, a retired police dog, underwent life-saving surgery thanks to charity support after a sudden illness put her life at risk
Surrey: An ex-police dog named Fiji is on the mend after a scary health scare. This brave pup, who served for six years, needed emergency surgery, and it was only possible thanks to donations from a charity.
Fiji was just a puppy when she joined the police force. She had a tough start, being rescued after her owner’s tragic passing. Claire, her handler, took her in and they formed a strong bond.
During her time on the force, Fiji was a lifesaver. Claire shared a story about a high-risk missing person case where Fiji’s keen sense of smell helped find a man who was unconscious but alive. That night, Fiji truly earned her hero status.
Sadly, her career ended early due to an injury while playing. After that, she retired to live with Claire and her family, enjoying a quieter life.
Recently, though, things took a turn. Claire was relaxing at home when she noticed Fiji wasn’t feeling well. After some worrying signs, she rushed Fiji to the vet in a panic, still in her pajamas!
Fiji underwent x-rays and surgery, and Claire was on edge waiting for updates. Thankfully, the vets managed to save her, but it was a close call. The surgery was costly, so Claire reached out to the Thin Blue Paw Foundation for help.
The charity has been a lifesaver for Fiji, covering nearly £10,000 in medical expenses over the years. Their chairman expressed pride in being able to support these heroic dogs in their time of need.
Now, Fiji is back home, recovering and getting the love she deserves. Claire is incredibly grateful for the charity and all the donors who made this possible. She feels lucky to have had such a special dog by her side, especially after all they’ve been through together.
Fiji truly deserves a happy retirement after her years of service, and thanks to the support she received, she can enjoy it to the fullest.
