Plans to transform the Hebburn Health Centre into a care facility for adults with severe disabilities have been approved by South Tyneside Council.
Hebburn: South Tyneside Council has approved plans to convert the old health centre. This site will become a specialist care facility for adults with severe disabilities.
The health centre, located on Campbell Park Road, has been mostly empty. The GP surgery moved to the Glen Primary Care Centre, leaving the building vacant.
New owners took over the site in 2024 and submitted plans to repurpose it. The goal is to create a facility with respite care and a day centre for adults with complex needs.
The facility will include a swimming pool, sensory room, and therapy rooms. It will also have bedrooms for overnight care and a dining area.
The day centre will operate daily from 9 am to 4 pm. The hydrotherapy pool will be available for hire in the evenings for clients with disabilities.
Over 20 new jobs will be created, mostly full-time positions. However, some residents raised concerns about parking and increased traffic.
Despite objections, the council approved the plans, stating the facility will help vulnerable adults. They noted the site is well-located with good access to local services.
The council also mentioned that the previous use of the site as a surgery would have caused similar traffic and disturbance.
They assured residents that the development would not significantly increase noise or privacy issues. The existing pharmacy will remain open for the public.
