The parents of Ava Hodgkinson, who died from a treatable infection, call for urgent changes to prevent future tragedies for other children
Ava was taken to the doctor on December 13, 2022, because she had a bad cough. Unfortunately, there was a national shortage of the antibiotic that she needed. The doctor prescribed a different medication, but when Adam went to pick it up, he found out that the correct dosage was also unavailable.
The next morning, they finally got the right prescription. But just hours after taking her first dose, Ava’s condition worsened. Tragically, as her mom rushed her to the hospital, Ava went into cardiac arrest and passed away.
An inquest revealed that the government is looking into changing laws to allow pharmacists to provide alternative medications when the prescribed ones are out of stock. The coroner plans to send a report to the Health Secretary to push for these changes.
Ava’s parents expressed their deep sorrow, describing her as a beautiful soul who loved nature and everyone around her. They hope that by sharing their story, they can raise awareness about the dangers of antibiotic shortages and ensure that no other child suffers like Ava did.
Their lawyer, Bryony Doyle, praised their strength during this difficult time and emphasized the importance of making changes to protect future patients. The family is determined to honor Ava’s memory by advocating for better access to necessary treatments.
