Teachers overwhelmingly voted to strike amid Glasgow City Council budget cuts threatening hundreds of jobs and impacting student learning.
These cuts already reduced teacher numbers a lot. The union, EIS, warned the council, as they want the cuts stopped and reversed. Last year, cuts could eliminate 450 jobs, and already, 120 jobs disappeared last year. Now, the EIS says about 300 jobs are gone.
The EIS leader, Andrea Bradley, spoke out. Glasgow teachers sent a clear message that the council needs to halt these education cuts fast. Schools feel the effects already because around 300 teaching jobs were removed.
Ms. Bradley says this hurts Glasgow schools, and kids’ learning experiences are worse. Teacher workload is also at crisis levels. She wants the council to work with teachers and provide the best education.
She added that Glasgow has high deprivation, and many young people struggle with poverty. Cutting teachers is a disgrace, and pupils’ learning will be damaged. This vote should make the council rethink things. The council acknowledges the vote result and knows teachers might strike.
