A Glasgow carer has been dismissed for dishonestly covering up a fall that injured a vulnerable wheelchair user
Glasgow: A carer named Patrick Mharapara has been kicked off the register after lying about a fall that broke a vulnerable person’s shoulder. This incident happened while he was working at Living Ambitions Limited.
On August 30, 2022, Mharapara didn’t report that the person he was caring for had fallen. Instead, he misled a colleague about it. He even moved the individual improperly after the fall, which is just wrong.
The person he cared for is autistic, non-verbal, and uses a wheelchair. Initially, Mharapara claimed the individual hurt his wrist after sliding off a shower chair. But when they went to the hospital, doctors found nothing wrong with the wrist.
Days later, the same person was taken back to the hospital, where they discovered a fractured shoulder in two places. Mharapara’s false report delayed the proper treatment, and it was only after the individual pointed to their shoulder that the injury was noticed.
Even though he knew the information he provided was false, Mharapara didn’t take any steps to correct it. The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) said he abused the trust placed in him and hasn’t shown any remorse for his actions.
After the injury, the individual needed physiotherapy and became withdrawn, often retreating to their bedroom. The SSSC report highlighted how Mharapara failed to report the fall and didn’t reach out to management to correct his misleading information.
Ultimately, the panel decided to remove Mharapara from his position to protect the public interest. His removal will take effect on January 7, 2025.
