Wales Rugby Union plans to appoint former players to a new panel as discussions about Sam Warburton’s potential role heat up
Cardiff: So, it looks like the Wales Rugby Union is shaking things up a bit. They’re thinking about bringing in some of Warren Gatland’s former players to form a new high-performance panel. This is all happening while there’s buzz around Sam Warburton possibly stepping into a role with the national team.
Warburton’s name has been tossed around lately, especially with Sir Clive Woodward backing him for a director of rugby position. Even though he’s downplaying it, you can bet he’s on the WRU’s radar, along with other former captains like Ken Owens and Alun Wyn Jones.
It’s interesting timing, too. Gatland’s been under a lot of scrutiny from former players, with Jamie Roberts and Mike Phillips voicing their concerns. WRU’s CEO, Abi Tierney, mentioned that they’re still figuring out who will be on this new panel, but they’re looking for a mix of players and coaches who really understand high-level sports.
Meanwhile, in other news, young star Cameron Winnett has signed a long-term deal with Cardiff. He’s been making waves since his debut in 2021 and is excited to keep building with the team.
And let’s not forget about Gloucester, who just bagged a solid 14-0 win over Harlequins. They played a strong defensive game and kept the Quins scoreless, which is no small feat.
Lastly, Canada has announced Steve Meehan as their new head coach after parting ways with Kingsley Jones. Meehan’s got a solid coaching background and is eager to help grow rugby in Canada.
