Before that meeting, the planning officer shared a report suggesting approval, even with some pushback from locals. People are worried about noise, crime, and gambling addiction.
Interestingly, a police officer mentioned they’re not against the idea but are cautious about the 24-hour operation in a high-crime area. To ease worries, the planning officer suggested limiting the hours to 9 am to 2 am.
They noted that the area has its issues, so they want to keep things in check. The report also mentioned plans for noise insulation, CCTV, and a better shopfront design to tackle safety and noise concerns.
As for gambling addiction, the report pointed out that those issues are handled under different laws, not planning rules. They can’t duplicate what’s already managed by the Gambling Act.
Merkur is trying to clear up some misconceptions about their venues. They say they don’t have Fixed Odds Betting Terminals, don’t serve alcohol, and aim to keep noise down. They even plan to put up a sign saying no drinking outside the venue.
