Residents in Cornwall are outraged over plans for a parking machine at a scenic location, fearing it will ruin the area’s natural charm.
Cornwall: Locals are really upset about a new parking machine planned for a beautiful spot in West Portholland. They think it’ll ruin the charm of the area. The landowner has tried to put in parking equipment before, and people have called it “predatory” and “invasive.”
The Cornwall Council had initially turned down the request from Initial Parking Ltd to install a payment machine and a number plate camera. This was meant for the Caerhays Estate, which is in a protected area known for its stunning landscapes.
Even though the council said no, the developer appealed, and a government inspector gave the green light after visiting the site. The inspector thought the new features wouldn’t spoil the area too much, but many locals disagree.
Residents have formed a group called Friends of Portholland to fight against these parking plans. They’ve submitted nearly 150 objections to the council, showing just how much this matters to them.
One commenter pointed out that there are plenty of free beach car parks along the coast. They suggested that the Caerhays Estate should consider donating the car park instead of charging locals. Another person chimed in, saying it’s just greed on the estate’s part.
People are worried that charging for parking will take away from what makes Cornwall special. They feel like every piece of land is becoming a money-making opportunity, and it’s frustrating. Some even wonder if we’ll soon be charged for using the pavement!
While some think the owners have the right to charge for their land, others argue that it’s just wrong. They believe beaches should be free for everyone, especially for families who can’t afford to go anywhere else.
What do you think? Should beach car parks be allowed to charge? Would it ruin the beauty of the area? Share your thoughts in the comments!
