Residents are outraged as South Gloucestershire Council plans a 4.99% tax hike, sparking debates about financial management and public consultations.
Bristol: People are really upset about the news from South Gloucestershire Council. They’re planning to raise council tax by 4.99% starting in April. That means Band D households will see their bills jump to £1,931.33. Ouch!
This increase is hitting hard, especially since many residents voiced their opposition during the public consultation. It’s the maximum hike allowed without forcing a local vote, which feels pretty frustrating for those who spoke up.
The draft budget doesn’t cut services, but it does include some fee hikes. For example, garden waste collection charges are going up from £60 to £70. Just last year, they were only $30! Plus, there are new parking fees and cuts to funding for public toilets and parks.
Even though they’re predicting a balanced budget for the next couple of years, the council leader, Lib Dem Cllr Maggie Tyrrell, warns that tough times are ahead. Sounds like a bit of a juggling act!
One reader, j00e, is really frustrated. They pointed out that 55% of people opposed the tax hike, yet the council went ahead anyway. They’re questioning why they even bother with consultations if the council ignores the feedback.
Another commenter, Brother Johnny, chimed in, saying it’s just a consultation, not a vote. They think the council was relieved that only 55% opposed the increase.
Smarty8 raised a good point about the council’s debt, which is over £40 million. They’re frustrated that the council isn’t doing more to collect this money, especially since it could help lower taxes.
MaddDogg is worried that this tax increase is just the beginning. They believe the council will keep raising it to the max every year. It’s a cycle that seems never-ending!
Delboy51 reminded everyone that parish council rates add to the burden. They’re feeling the pinch and just want a break from all these hikes.
Blackbeard83 summed it up well, saying, “Almost every single council are doing this. They’re all broke.”
Jubblyone4 thinks the government funding is too low, forcing everyone to pay more. They want the council to cut waste and focus on the essentials instead.
Klinger believes the financial issues aren’t just from the current administration. They think councils are running out of money due to high social care pressures and low funding.
Junius1 congratulated South Gloucestershire for managing to keep the increase to 4.99%, especially compared to Bristol, which has bigger financial challenges.
