Residents are outraged as a 400-lodge luxury resort is set to be built in Newquay, Cornwall, despite local opposition and concerns.
Newquay: A luxury resort has just been given the go-ahead in this popular seaside town, and folks are not happy about it.
We’re talking about a massive 400-lodge resort on over 70 hectares of farmland. The Cornwall Council’s planning committee approved it, and construction is set to start soon.
This Green Ridge Resort will be built near Colan and Quintrell Downs, and about 250 of those lodges will be used as holiday homes. That’s where the trouble starts for many locals.
One resident expressed their frustration, pointing out that with the recent closure of a luxury resort in St Ives, there’s really no need for another one. They’re worried about the impact on the area.
Abe Simpson from Kingsley Leisure, the developers, claims they want to create a unique holiday experience for Cornwall, not just another holiday park.
But local objectors, represented by Jonathan Lambe, argue that this development will harm the landscape and local community. They believe the economic benefits are exaggerated and that these holiday homes won’t be rented out enough to make a difference.
Visit Cornwall has also raised concerns, saying the local market is already saturated with holiday homes.
Some say this resort will be as big as a small village, which has raised even more eyebrows among locals.
Critics like Lambe argue that instead of building a new resort, support should go to existing holiday parks to help them improve. They fear this new development will overwhelm local amenities and ruin the peaceful vibe that attracts visitors in the first place.
