Cambridgeshire faces further bus service delays after an operator pulls out, affecting several key routes across the region
Cambridgeshire: So, it looks like there are going to be more delays with the bus services in Cambridgeshire. The operator that was supposed to run some routes has pulled out, which is a real bummer.
This operator had won bids to manage seven bus routes that were funded by the local authority. Back in 2022, the Combined Authority had to step in to save these bus services because they were struggling to stay afloat.
Now, with the operator backing out, they have to start the whole tendering process over again. This means the affected services won’t be up and running until May at the earliest. These routes cover important areas like Peterborough, Cambridge, Ely, and a few others.
Mayor Dr. Nik Johnson expressed his pride in the progress made so far, but he understands that this delay is frustrating. He reassured everyone that they’ve faced operator issues before and are working hard to get things back on track.
Out of the 53 services funded through the mayoral precept, 38 are already operational. Plus, there are some new flexible bus services launching soon to help rural areas. The local authority is also introducing some cool initiatives like a £1 bus fare for under-25s next year.
So, while it’s a bit of a setback, there are still positive changes coming for bus services in the area. Fingers crossed they can sort this out quickly!
