Bus drivers in Cambridgeshire express frustration over traffic delays affecting services and passenger experience
Cambridgeshire: Bus drivers are really feeling the heat from all the traffic jams lately. They’re saying that the gridlock is making it tough for them to keep their schedules. Just the other night, the Busway between St Ives and Cambridge was a total mess. One driver from Stagecoach East shared how it took him 35 minutes just to get from the depot to the A1307. Can you believe that?
He mentioned that with all the roadworks in Cambridge, the Busway service was practically nonexistent. Drivers were left stranded, having to return to the depot on a service bus. It was a nightmare! He said it was the worst he’s ever seen it.
There are so many issues, like congestion around Addenbrookes and temporary lights on Station Road. Hills Road and the city are also jammed up. Plus, there’s a water leak on Harrison Way in St Ives, which has caused even more delays. It’s frustrating when the only road in and out of St Ives is at a standstill because of all this.
Ross Barton, the Operations Director at Stagecoach East, expressed his frustration too. He apologized to customers and said that congestion is a real problem in the area. He pointed out that while Cambridge and Peterborough are growing rapidly, the roads just can’t keep up.
Barton emphasized the need for better parking enforcement and bus priority measures. He believes everyone involved in roadworks should be more aware of how their work affects traffic and local buses. It’s clear that something needs to change to ease the congestion and improve the situation for everyone.
