A Syrian man opens a Lebanese restaurant in Byker, honoring his grandfather’s legacy with authentic cuisine and a warm atmosphere.
Byker: A young Syrian man has opened a Lebanese restaurant called Beyruty, inspired by his grandfather’s grill house back in Beirut. Osama Kabas, just 26, wanted to bring a piece of his family’s history to Newcastle.
Teaming up with his friend Ayoub Asafra, a chef from Daraa, they’re serving up delicious Arabic dishes that are sure to please the locals. Osama, or Sam as he likes to be called, shared how his grandfather’s restaurant was a big part of his life. He said, “It was my dream to open one like it here.”
He’s recreated the vibe of his grandfather’s place, complete with the same gold decor. Sam believes his grandfather would be thrilled to see this dream come to life in a different country.
The spot used to be another Lebanese restaurant, but after some trouble, it was left in disarray. Sam saw potential and jumped in to fix it up. Now, he’s created ten jobs and hopes to hire even more as business grows.
Sam spent over a month on the interior design, making sure it felt just right. He’s been welcomed warmly by the community, not just from fellow Syrians and Lebanese, but from everyone in Byker. He wants to make sure that even if you’re new to Lebanese food, you’ll feel right at home.
“We’re here to take care of you,” he said. “You don’t need to know anything about this kind of food. Just come and enjoy!”
Beyruty opened last Friday and can seat 80 diners. They don’t have an alcohol license yet, but you can bring your own drinks. Plus, they offer takeaway for those on the go.
Sam’s menu features familiar favorites like hummus and kebabs, but also some unique dishes. He’s all about that grill house style, with seasoned meats and grilled veggies. He wants every guest to feel special from the moment they walk in.
“We might even surprise you with some fresh bread and hummus on the house,” he added. “That’s what Lebanese hospitality is all about!”
