A roofer’s employee stole over £8,000 by memorizing his boss’s PIN to pay off drug debts
Nottingham: So, there’s this roofer who got totally ripped off by one of his own workers. This guy, Jonathan Topliss, managed to swipe over £8,000 from his boss. Can you believe that?
It all went down in court, where they revealed how Topliss watched his boss enter his PIN while they were chilling in the van. Then, when the boss left his phone unattended, Topliss jumped at the chance and logged into the banking app.
He transferred a whopping £8,335.10 into his own account. When the roofer noticed the missing cash, he confronted Topliss, who eventually fessed up to the police. Turns out, he was in deep with drug debts.
Sergeant James Smith, who was on the case, said this whole thing really hurt the roofer’s business. Topliss, who has a pretty long rap sheet, admitted he was spending around £130 a day on crack cocaine. That’s just wild.
In the end, Topliss got a six-month prison sentence, but it’s suspended for 18 months. He’s also got to do some rehab and pay back some court costs. Luckily, the roofer’s bank covered his losses.
Smith mentioned he was glad Topliss owned up quickly, but now he’s lost out on job opportunities because of his betrayal. It’s a tough lesson learned, for sure.
