A closed Somerset spa could be redeveloped into homes if appeals succeed
Somerset: Part of the old Rookery Manor spa might get a new lease on life. If the appeals go through, it could be turned into homes. This place used to be a wedding venue and a spa until late last year.
Ian Clapp, the owner, still runs some holiday cabins nearby. He tried to get permission to convert the main building into nine apartments and add more cabins, but the council said no last July.
Now, he’s appealing that decision. The Planning Inspectorate will decide by summer. The plan is to create three-bedroom apartments with living spaces and outdoor access.
Previously, Clapp wanted to put up 18 cabins but was turned down in late 2022. Some local councillors, like Bob Filmer, are worried about adding too many homes in a small hamlet like Edingworth.
Filmer mentioned that the site has changed a lot over the years, even being a pig farm at one point. He questioned if building more homes here is really sustainable.
Another councillor, Matt Martin, expressed concern that they’re just trying to find a new use for the old wedding venue. The inspector will visit soon, and we should hear back by late spring.
