Blackburn: The old care home on Shadsworth estate is getting a makeover. It’s being replaced with 25 new homes for affordable rent. Together Housing Association got the green light from the council to move ahead with this project.

These new homes will be built where Gleneagles Court used to stand. This is part of a bigger plan to revamp the 1950s estate, which is set to cost around £20 million.

The council mentioned that the area is mostly empty, with some open space nearby. The care home was torn down last year, making way for this new development.

According to planning officer Christian Barton, the plan includes 25 homes with gardens and parking. They’ll be in four blocks, featuring a mix of one to four-bedroom apartments.

All the new homes will be affordable and managed by Together Housing Association. They’ll use a nice mix of buff bricks and slate effect tiles for the roofs, with grey frames for the windows and doors.

First-floor apartments will have Juliette balconies, and there will be canopies above the front doors. Plus, they’re planning to add solar panels on the roofs and landscaped gardens.

Some locals have raised concerns, saying the construction might disrupt the area and that there won’t be enough parking for residents and visitors.

The planning policy states that at least 20% of homes should cater to older and vulnerable people, and this plan meets those needs. There’s also a requirement for some homes to be wheelchair accessible, which they’ve included.

People have also commented on the design, but the new homes are expected to look much better than the old care home. For parking, they’re planning 40 spaces—37 for future residents and three to replace lost spots nearby.
