Families in Silverdale are concerned about a new flats plan that could overwhelm local resources and infrastructure
Silverdale: There’s a lot of chatter about a new plan to build 42 flats where 14 bungalows used to stand. Aspire Housing wants to put up these affordable homes on St Luke’s Close, but not everyone is on board.
So, here’s the scoop: the plan includes a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments in a three-storey building, plus some smaller blocks. But folks in the area are worried. Thirteen people, along with the local parish council, have raised their voices against it, saying it just doesn’t fit with the neighborhood.
Planning officers think it’s a good idea, though. They say it’s in a great spot and will blend in nicely. The committee will decide on Tuesday evening, so it’s all up in the air for now.
According to the proposal, all the flats would be for affordable rent. The developers argue that this will help revitalize the area and provide much-needed housing. They claim it won’t harm the environment or local wildlife either.
But the objectors are worried about too many homes crammed into one spot. They say it’ll put a strain on roads and local services, which are already feeling the pressure.
One local, Julie Milllar, expressed her concerns, saying the area can’t handle more homes. She pointed out that schools are full and the local doctor’s office can’t take on more patients. It’s a real worry for the community.
On the flip side, planning officers believe the new flats won’t invade anyone’s privacy. They think the three-storey building will fit in just fine.
Some objectors also mentioned that the flats don’t meet national space standards. A typical two-bedroom apartment is smaller than what’s recommended. But the officers argue that this is okay since it’s an affordable housing project.
As for parking, the plan includes 35 spaces for 42 homes, which is below the recommended amount. However, they believe that people in affordable housing usually own fewer cars.
So, the planning committee will take a closer look at everything when they meet at 7pm on Wednesday. It’s definitely a hot topic in Silverdale!
