Neil Marshall and Libby Walker aim to produce films in the North East, boosting local jobs and economy.
Newcastle: A new production company is making waves in the North East. Neil Marshall, known for hits like Dog Soldiers, is teaming up with Libby Walker. They’ve launched Nana Peg Productions in South Shields.
The goal? To create films and TV series right in the region. This could mean big bucks for local businesses and new jobs for skilled workers.
Nana Peg Productions is named after Libby’s grandmother. It coincides with the opening of the £500 million Crown Works film studios in Sunderland. This is part of a bigger push to make the North East a film and TV hotspot.
Neil says they’re just getting started but have huge plans. They need investment to kick things off and keep projects moving.
Libby believes the North East has stunning locations for films. From cities to beaches, it’s rich in history. She’s excited to showcase places like Bamburgh Castle and Cragside.
Libby also wants to change how the North East is seen in media. She feels it’s time for a more authentic view of the region and its people.
With new studios in Sunderland, it’s the perfect time to grow the film industry here. They want to inspire local talent and show that a career in film is possible.
Upcoming projects include Kings of the North, about Muhammad Ali’s visit to the area in 1977. The script is being written by Fleur Costello, a fellow film studies graduate.
Next up is an action movie called Pound of Flesh. Neil will write and direct it, inspired by classic revenge thrillers.
Neil recalls being in Newcastle during Ali’s visit. He thinks it’s a charming story about dreams and aspirations.
Libby and Neil are passionate about their roots. They want local kids to see themselves in various roles in films, changing the narrative for future generations.
Neil is famous for horror films but has also worked on popular TV shows like Game of Thrones. Libby, from South Shields, is an actor and producer, known for her role in Fishermen’s Friends 2.
