Middlesbrough’s Longlands Road overbridge may need major repairs or replacement, as revealed in a council report.
Middlesbrough: A bridge on Longlands Road is in pretty rough shape. Councillors are gearing up to discuss whether it needs major repairs or a complete replacement.
This news comes from an executive report that will be shared at a council meeting on January 15. The bridge crosses over train tracks near the Longlands roundabout, a busy spot for drivers heading into town or towards Marton.
Councillor Peter Gavigan, who looks after environment and sustainability, will answer questions about this report. It also covers inspections of 169 bridges around the area.
Specifically, the Longlands Road bridge is set for a full inspection that was supposed to happen in December 2024. But it got pushed back because Network Rail couldn’t make it. They’re now looking to reschedule for January 2025.
The report suggests that extensive repairs or even a full replacement might be on the table. If that’s the case, they’ll need to go through design and approval phases in 2025-26, with major work possibly starting in 2026-27, depending on funding.
There’s no word yet on how much this might cost, but it’s definitely something to keep an eye on.
