A dog behavior expert raises alarms about the rising popularity of the Cane Corso breed in the UK, calling it a potential threat to public safety
Suffolk: A dog behavior specialist is sounding the alarm about a breed that’s gaining traction in the UK. The Cane Corso, an Italian mastiff, is being called more dangerous than the notorious XL bully.
Despite strict rules on XL bullies, interest in Cane Corsos is skyrocketing. Experts are worried this breed could pose a real threat to people.
Rob Alleyne from the Canine Instructor Academy didn’t hold back. He said, “The Cane Corso is like an XL bully on steroids. It’s a killing machine.” He’s noticed more of these dogs at his facility and thinks it’s a repeat of past mistakes.
He pointed out that when the Pit Bull Terrier was banned, people just turned to even more dangerous breeds. Now, with the XL bully restrictions, folks are looking at Cane Corsos instead.
His warning comes after a woman in her thirties had to get plastic surgery after trying to break up a fight between her XL bully and Cane Corso at home. That’s pretty serious!
Right now, there are 220 Cane Corso puppies for sale online, with prices ranging from £380 to £2,000. Alleyne believes the popularity of Cane Corsos is climbing because of the bans on XL bullies.
Since last February, owning an XL bully in the UK without a special certificate is illegal. Those who do have one must keep their dogs securely housed and muzzled in public.
