Falkirk: Exciting plans are in the works for new sports and leisure facilities in Bo’ness, Denny, and the Braes. Even though there are some funding concerns, the projects are moving forward.

The council is set to kick off a £4.3 million extension at Bo’ness Academy soon. This will replace the old Bo’ness Recreation Centre that closed last year. They’re hoping to start as soon as the school is back in council hands in August.

Meanwhile, a new facility in Denny is on the horizon, with a budget of £5.3 million, expected to begin in 2026. It’s all part of a bigger plan to enhance local sports and leisure options.

However, the new facilities at Braes High School might be part of a larger project, which could cost around £7.5 million. The current budget of £10.5 million just won’t cut it for everything they want to do.

A recent report highlighted community feedback, showing what locals really want from these new facilities. Even though some councillors raised concerns about space for groups like Active Forth, they were reassured that the new facilities would meet demand.

Paul Kettrick from Invest Falkirk mentioned that the gym and dance hall at the academy would be available and improved. He’s confident that the plans will accommodate all current and future classes.

Changes have already been made based on community input, like enlarging the multi-purpose studio and adding more lockers in the changing rooms. They’re really trying to make these spaces user-friendly.

In Denny, the standalone sports facility will include a fitness suite and more, with work starting in spring 2026. The goal is to have it ready by mid-2027.

Despite the funding challenges, the council is committed to pushing forward with all three projects. They’re exploring ways to fund the Braes improvements through service concessions.

Councillor Paul Garner expressed his excitement about the project, calling it one of the most thrilling initiatives he’s seen. He believes the new gym in Denny will be a fantastic addition to the town.

Labour group leader Anne Hannah praised the council for listening to community feedback and making adjustments to the plans. These new facilities will complement other larger projects planned for Falkirk and Grangemouth.
