London: The Silvertown Tunnel is finally getting its opening date! This massive £2.2 billion project will give drivers another way to cross under the River Thames, right next to the Blackwall Tunnel.

So, here’s the scoop: Transport for London (TfL) has announced that starting April 7, 2025, drivers will need to pay a toll to use both tunnels. It’ll cost £4 during peak hours and £1.50 when it’s quieter.

But wait, there’s more! TfL promises that this new tunnel will make trips faster and more reliable, potentially saving up to 20 minutes during busy times. Plus, they’re planning to ramp up bus services from six to 21 buses an hour, all zero-emission and free for the first year.

However, not everyone is thrilled. Reform UK has called the toll a “kick in the teeth” for drivers. Alex Wilson from the London Assembly pointed out that many hardworking Londoners will feel the pinch with charges that could add up to £8 a day for both tunnels.

Critics are also worried about pollution. The Green Party’s London mayoral candidate has said that the plans are “contradictory” and could harm local kids by exposing them to toxic air.

On the bright side, there will be discounts for low-income residents in certain boroughs, and small businesses can get a £1 off-peak discount for at least a year. Plus, buses and larger vehicles won’t have to pay the tolls at all.

Stuart Harvey from TfL expressed excitement about the tunnel’s opening, highlighting the hard work that’s gone into it. He believes it will help manage traffic and support local growth while being mindful of the environment.
