Karl Hinett, a former soldier, faces a tough Arctic challenge to raise funds for veterans after enduring severe injuries from a petrol bomb.
Basra: A former soldier, Karl Hinett, is gearing up for an incredible 300-mile Arctic trek with three other veterans. This journey is a way to mark 20 years since he suffered serious burns from a petrol bomb attack while serving in Iraq.
At just 38, Karl has been through a lot. He endured 16 surgeries over five years to recover from burns covering 37% of his body. Now, he’s ready to take on the Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra in Sweden, aiming to raise money for SSAFA, a charity that supports veterans.
“I’m really looking forward to this adventure,” Karl shared. “It’s a way to celebrate my journey and help others who are struggling.” He’s joined by some well-known faces, including Jason Fox from SAS: Who Dares Wins and adventurer Aldo Kane.
They’ll be trekking through snow and ice for ten days, which sounds tough but rewarding. Karl has run marathons and climbed mountains, but he believes this challenge will be one of the hardest yet due to the extreme conditions.
To prepare, the team trained in northern Sweden, practicing skiing and pulling sleds loaded with their gear. Jason Fox, a former UK Special Forces soldier, said this will be his toughest expedition yet, highlighting the brutal nature of the challenge.
Fox also shared how SSAFA helped him with his mental health after leaving the military. He’s passionate about giving back to those who are struggling, which is why they’re doing this trek.
Another team member, Aldo Kane, is excited but nervous, as this is his first ultra race. He’s spent years in extreme environments and wants to support veterans in need.
Brian Wood, an author and military cross recipient, is feeling the pressure too. He’s more accustomed to warm weather running, so this cold challenge is a big deal for him. He’s determined to push himself for a good cause.
