Non Evans shares her struggles after a hit-and-run left her with severe injuries
Swansea: So, you know that Welsh rugby legend Non Evans? She’s been through a tough time lately. Back in September 2023, she was hit by a car while biking near her home in Mumbles. The driver just took off, leaving her with some serious injuries, including a nasty wrist fracture.
The driver, an 87-year-old woman, eventually faced the music in court for not stopping after the accident. Non shared that this crash has turned her life upside down. She can’t work as a personal trainer anymore and has had to deal with some pretty scary medical issues, like sepsis.
In a recent chat, Non opened up about how she’s been feeling. She’s struggling with her confidence and knows things will never be the same. At 50, she’s facing a long road to recovery, and it’s been a real challenge. She’s had to go back to the hospital multiple times because her wrist isn’t healing right.
After some tests, doctors decided to do more surgery to fix her wrist. Non, who’s represented Wales in rugby and has medals in other sports, talked about how she realized her health was in jeopardy. She had to have a pin removed and a plate put in her wrist, which means she can’t do things like press-ups anymore.
Even though she’s grateful for the surgery, she noticed signs of infection during her recovery. Having dealt with sepsis before, she knew what to look for and rushed to the hospital. They caught it early, but it was still a tough experience.
Non’s been feeling the weight of this injury, not just physically but mentally too. She’s always been active, training every day and helping others. Now, she can’t even open a tin or cut her food without help. It’s a big change for someone who’s always been on the go.
She’s been trying to keep up her fitness, but it’s hard when her wrist is fused. It’s really hit her self-esteem. She misses her muscles and the active lifestyle she once had. Non shared that this injury has changed her personality, and she’s struggling to cope with it.
Despite everything, she’s still trying to help others with their fitness, but it’s not the same. She’s only working with a few clients now, and it’s tough for her to accept that she can’t do things the way she used to. She’s frustrated with the legal side of things too, as she’s been talking to a solicitor about her injuries and loss of earnings.
Non reflected on how this incident has affected her life. She feels embarrassed and frustrated, saying she’s a strong person who can’t even open a bottle now. It’s a lot for her to handle, and she’s still trying to find her way back to the confident person she used to be.
