He’s signed up under the UK Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme, which helps vulnerable folks find a place to stay. It’s been a lifeline for many, with thousands of Ukrainians finding homes in Scotland. Hosts can get paid a bit for their help, but Day hasn’t said if he’s taking any cash for it.
Interestingly, he’s got a Ukrainian refugee living in one of his four properties in Edinburgh. Critics are scratching their heads, wondering why he’s still allowed to be part of this scheme after his resignation last month.
There’s been a welfare check on the refugee, but some council members are worried about the safety of vulnerable people. Simita Kumar, the SNP group leader, is particularly concerned and thinks Day should step back from the program immediately.
On top of that, there’s an investigation into Day because he had someone living in one of his properties without being a registered landlord. He’s got a few properties in Edinburgh, and officials are looking into whether he’s making money off them.
Some sources close to him say the tenant is just a relative and that he’s not getting any rent. Meanwhile, the police are also looking into his behavior, including those messages to the refugees.
Disclosure Scotland mentioned that it’s up to organizations to check if hosts are suitable. The council hasn’t commented much, and Day hasn’t responded to any inquiries.
