WH Smith is considering selling its high street stores, risking hundreds of jobs across Scotland
Glasgow: WH Smith is in talks to sell its high street stores. This could put thousands of jobs at risk in Scotland. The company has over 700 stores in the UK and employs more than 5,000 people.
The 233-year-old retailer is discussing options with private equity firms. They want to focus on their travel retail business, which operates in airports and train stations. Potential buyers include Hilco and Modella Capital.
If the sale goes through, it may lead to store closures and job cuts. Analysts say WH Smith has a good understanding of its business, but new owners might not have the same insight.
WH Smith plans to close 17 stores this year due to online competition. Their overall performance dropped by 3%, while travel retail grew by 6%. Staff are worried about their futures amid this uncertainty.
The company aims to keep its travel business name, but new owners may not use the brand’s reputation. Analysts predict the sale could fetch over £100 million. About 60 stores in Scotland are at risk, especially those in airports and train stations.
