Cornwall: In the last three years, 25 banks have closed. More are set to shut down in 2025. This trend is part of a larger issue across the UK.

Since 2022, over 1,600 banks have closed nationwide. This includes more than 100 closures planned for this year alone.

In Cornwall, three more banks will close this year. Lloyds in Liskeard is shutting in February, followed by closures in Newquay and Wadebridge.

TSB in Bude is also closing, but the date is still unknown. The closures are widespread, affecting towns like Falmouth, Wadebridge, and Liskeard.

Nationwide, 35 banks have closed or will close by the end of January. In 2025, about 120 branches have already shut or announced closures.

Last year, over 400 banks closed. In total, 1,649 branches have shut since February 2022. That’s about 44 closures each month.

The LINK initiative aims to help those affected by these closures. It ensures vulnerable customers and small businesses still have access to banking services.

When banks close, new banking hubs or free ATMs are set up to help communities. This trend is impacting every part of the UK.

Warning Elderly ‘At Risk of Digital Exclusion’

Age UK warns that the loss of face-to-face banking could hurt many elderly people. They may struggle to manage their money without in-person services.

Research shows over four million older people in Britain don’t bank online. This puts them at risk of being excluded from essential services.

Age UK calls for better protection of physical banking services. They want shared banking hubs to be set up quickly in areas losing branches.

LINK’s Adrian Roberts says fewer branches are expected as more people bank online. However, many still rely on cash, so access must remain.

LINK is dedicated to keeping cash access available through banking hubs and ATMs. If anyone has concerns, they can reach out via the LINK website.

Cat Farrow from Cash Access UK mentions progress in opening banking hubs. They recently opened their 100th hub and expect more this year.

These hubs allow customers from all banks to access services in one place. It’s a positive step for those affected by closures.
