The Welsh government faces backlash over unpaid staff and bullying claims against eHarley Street managing GP surgeries
Brynmawr: So, there’s been quite a stir in Wales lately. First Minister Eluned Morgan is really upset with a private company, eHarley Street, that runs some GP surgeries. Reports are coming in about staff being bullied and not getting paid, which is just not okay.
This company took over several practices last year, and now politicians are calling it a “disgrace.” They’re saying eHarley Street doesn’t care about the patients they’re supposed to help. It’s a pretty big deal, especially since they manage eight surgeries in the Aneurin Bevan health board area.
Alun Davies, a Labour MS, pointed out that services at Brynmawr Medical Practice have really gone downhill since eHarley Street took over. He mentioned that the company owes doctors and locums a whopping £250,000, which is why many are refusing to work there. That’s a huge red flag!
More members of the Senedd are speaking out, too. Hefin David, another Labour MS, said patients have noticed the drop in service quality. Staff aren’t getting paid on time, and the health board hasn’t provided any solid answers. It’s clear that something needs to change.
Delyth Jewell from Plaid Cymru is also raising concerns. She’s questioning how the health board even decided to give eHarley Street these contracts in the first place. Patients are struggling to get appointments, and some doctors are owed thousands. It’s a mess!
Mr. Davies is really worried about the company’s leadership. The directors are involved in over 70 companies, and he’s concerned about the quality of care being compromised for profit. He’s calling the situation a disgrace and insists that we can’t let this happen.
Mrs. Morgan suggested that maybe the health board should take back control of the surgeries. She’s not happy about the unpaid staff and thinks there should be consequences. It’s a tough situation, especially since recruiting in some areas is already challenging.
There’s talk of an inquiry, but Mr. Davies thinks that’s not necessary. He just wants action from the Welsh Government to ensure people get the services they deserve. It’s all about making sure the community is taken care of.
One patient shared their frustration, saying the Brynmawr surgery has been letting everyone down. Long wait times and limited appointments are becoming the norm. It’s tough when you have to wait hours just to see a doctor.
They also mentioned that the pharmacy is often out of stock, which is a real problem for people needing medication. It’s clear that the community is feeling neglected, and that’s just not right.
WalesOnline has reached out to eHarley Street and the health board for comments. The company claims they’re in regular contact with the health board and are working on the issues raised. They’re also open to meeting with the First Minister to discuss concerns.
It’s a complicated situation, and many are hoping for a resolution soon. The community deserves better, and it’s time for some serious changes.
