Cardiff: It looks like the long wait for a new railway station in Cardiff might be coming to an end. After a year of discussions and hearings, the project is finally gaining some traction. The Welsh Government has been reviewing the plans for the Cardiff Parkway development, which includes a new railway station and a business park.

Cardiff Council gave the thumbs up back in 2022, but the Welsh Government had to step in since it’s a big deal for the area. They’re planning a four-platform station and a massive business park on land near St Mellons. A spokesperson mentioned that they’re still chatting with various groups about the project.

They’re asking for feedback until January 15, and a decision will follow. Everyone at Cardiff Council seems to want this wrapped up quickly. Both Conservative and Labour councillors are pushing for a decision by January 30, which is when they’ll have their next full council meeting.

At the start of December, the Welsh Government couldn’t promise a decision by then but said they’d act as soon as possible. The First Minister, Eluned Morgan, confirmed she’d be the one making the final call on this project. Even with all the uncertainty, Cardiff Parkway is still part of bigger transport plans.

For instance, the first phase of Cardiff Crossrail is moving ahead, which will connect Cardiff Central Station to Cardiff Bay. The Welsh Government is backing this project, and Transport for Wales is working alongside Cardiff Council to make it happen.

There’s a consultation page that says Cardiff Crossrail will eventually link up with Cardiff Parkway. Plus, the city council is looking to improve bus routes with six proposed corridors, and they’re gathering opinions until January 27.

During the planning hearings, some folks raised concerns about how the development might affect local wildlife. The land in question is part of a special scientific site, and some campaigners questioned whether we really need more office space there.

While some are excited about the potential jobs and economic boost, others worry about the environmental impact. A local councillor expressed frustration that the station hasn’t been built yet, saying it’s unfair to the community.

There’s even interest from companies like Rolls-Royce in setting up shop there. Another councillor emphasized that the case for Cardiff Parkway is strong and should have been addressed long ago. Everyone’s hoping for a positive decision soon!
