The trial of Hassan Sentamu continues as jurors hear crucial psychiatric evidence today
Croydon: The Elianne Andam murder trial is back in session today at the Old Bailey. Jurors are set to hear more psychiatric evidence regarding Hassan Sentamu, who is accused of killing the 15-year-old schoolgirl last September.
Sentamu, who is 18, claims he’s not guilty due to diminished responsibility, saying his autism played a role in his actions. He also argues he had a lawful reason for carrying a knife.
On Tuesday, a forensic psychiatrist, Professor Nigel Blackwood, testified that he diagnosed Sentamu with a conduct disorder. However, he emphasized that this doesn’t mean he couldn’t control himself.
The defense lawyer, Pavlos Panayi, pressed the professor about whether Sentamu’s autism affected his self-control. Professor Blackwood firmly stated it did not.
There was also a discussion about a SnapChat video that showed Sentamu being bullied. After watching it, Professor Blackwood maintained that it wouldn’t change his opinion on the case.
He concluded that the defense of diminished responsibility doesn’t apply here. When asked if it’s common for psychiatrists to disagree, he said it’s not usual, but it is in this case.
