Exciting changes are coming to a former shoe shop in Edinburgh’s city center as plans for an underground pub are underway
Edinburgh: A former shoe repair shop is getting a makeover. It’s being turned into an underground pub, and folks are buzzing about it.
The spot, located at 21A Castle Street, used to be H Robertson, right below The Golden Dragon Chinese restaurant. HIFI Ventures Limited has submitted plans to transform it into a lively public house.
If everything goes smoothly, the lower ground floor will feature a bar with cozy seating booths. There’ll even be a small staircase leading to another seating area. Plus, toilets will be on the same floor, while the basement will be used for storage.
Details about the bar and who will run it are still under wraps. The council planners are now reviewing the change of use application.
This place was previously listed for sale for over £300,000. Commercial property consultants described it as a self-contained retail unit spread over lower ground and basement levels in a charming four-storey stone tenement.
Access is easy, with a wide set of stairs leading right off Castle Street. Inside, it’s still set up for its old shoe repair shop days.
The lower ground floor is an open space that could work for other uses, pending planning approval. The basement can be reached via a separate staircase at the back.
