Edinburgh: A car went up in flames on the city bypass, causing quite a stir during rush hour. Commuters were warned to expect delays.

This happened on the A720 near Straiton just before 7 am on Thursday. Emergency services were quick to respond after reports of a vehicle “well alight.”

Fire crews from Liberton and Dalkeith showed up with hoses and breathing gear to tackle the blaze. Meanwhile, the bypass was closed off.

Thankfully, no one was hurt. Live traffic images showed smoke billowing as emergency services worked on the scene.

One driver passing by alerted Traffic Scotland, saying, “There’s a car on fire on the A720 westbound just past Straiton junction – fire engines are here, and both lanes are blocked.”

Traffic Scotland advised drivers that the westbound carriageway was closed due to the incident, with delays of about 19 minutes.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service mentioned they got the call at 6:44 am about the vehicle fire. Crews were on it, and luckily, there were no injuries reported.
