Bernie started the Short Strand Community Centre 35 years ago. Her vision was to create a space for everyone to access vital resources. She has worked hard to improve lives and embodies community service.

The Short Strand Community Centre is a beacon of hope in East Belfast. It provides essential services to those in need. Bernie has also played a key role in EastSide Partnership and East Belfast Sure Start, helping the community grow and thrive.

She has even organized events with notable figures like President Bill Clinton and King Charles. This shows her ability to represent the community on big stages.

Jonathan McAlpin, chair of the Eastside Awards committee, expressed pride in presenting the award to Bernie. He praised her as a shining light and a source of hope for future generations.

He also commended all the finalists and winners, celebrating the best of East Belfast. This year, the public vote category saw an impressive 20,000 votes, showing strong community support for the awards.

Thanks to sponsors, the Eastside Awards continue to thrive. Plans are already underway for the tenth awards in 2026, with hopes for ongoing support.

This year’s event was the most successful yet, held at Hastings Stormont Hotel. The ballroom was filled with people celebrating East Belfast’s achievements.
