The East Kilbride to Glasgow Central rail line will close for 16 weeks for major upgrades, impacting commuters and travel plans.
Glasgow: So, here’s the scoop. If you’re one of those folks who rely on the East Kilbride to Glasgow Central train, brace yourself for some disruption. The line is shutting down for 16 weeks starting January 25. Yup, you heard that right!
During this time, no trains will be running between East Kilbride and Thornliebank. They’re doing some serious upgrade work, including installing new overhead power cables and lengthening the double track. It’s all part of a big push to electrify the line.
They’re also lowering the track in some spots to fit the new equipment under bridges. It’s a lot of work, but it’s all aimed at making the rail services greener and more efficient.
By the end of 2025, we’ll see a fully electrified line, a shiny new station at East Kilbride, and improvements at other stations too. Sounds promising, right?
Gerry McQuade from Network Rail mentioned that closing the line was a tough call, but it’s necessary to get the job done quickly and safely. And Mark Ilderton from Scot Rail added that they’ll have a replacement bus service ready to help commuters during the closure.
So, keep an eye out for updates on where those replacement buses will be. It’s going to be a bit of a hassle, but the end result should be worth it!
