A €1,800 grant for solar panels is ending in 2029, with changes expected soon
Galway: A grant of up to €1,800 is available for many people. But there’s a deadline for applications.
This Solar Electricity Grant helps with buying and installing solar panels. You need to apply before you buy anything.
The government plans to cut the grant by €300 each year. They think solar panel prices will drop over time. The grant will end in 2029.
So, what are solar panels? They use sunlight to make hot water or electricity for your home.
Electricity-generating panels are called solar photovoltaic (PV) modules. They create power when light hits them.
Solar PV is what you see on rooftops. Panels that make hot water are called solar thermal collectors.
This grant focuses on PV panels. They capture sunlight and turn it into electricity for your home. You can use it for appliances like your TV or kettle.
Most homes need six or seven panels, which is about a 2 kW system. It’s important to design the system for your home’s energy use.
To qualify for the grant, you must meet several criteria:
- Own a home built before 2021
- Use new materials not covered by other grants
- Hire a registered company from the SEAI list
- Have a Safe Electric Ireland electrician do the work
- Apply to ESB Networks for electricity connection
- Provide a Declaration of Works from a registered installer
- Get a Building Energy Rating (BER) after the work
- Follow the Solar PV Code of Practice
The grant amount depends on your solar system’s peak output. Peak output is measured in kWp (kilowatt-peak). Here’s what you can get:
- €700 for 1 kWp
- €1,400 for 2 kWp
- €1,600 for 3 kWp
- €1,800 for 4 kWp
In 2025, the grant will be capped at €1,800. You can find more details online.
