Leicester is cracking down on illegal e-scooters and e-bikes, seizing them without warning to tackle ongoing issues in the city centre
Leicestershire Police launched a special operation called Op Pedalfast to address these problems. They found that a whopping 83% of people surveyed said e-scooters were a big issue, while 76% felt the same about e-bikes. So, it’s clear that something had to change.
The police have also noticed that many food delivery drivers are using these illegal vehicles. They’ve tried reaching out to the companies to address this, but it seems like more needs to be done. Since June 2023, they’ve issued 152 warnings and seized a handful of e-scooters and e-mopeds.
Now, if you’re caught riding an illegal e-bike or e-scooter, it’s game over right away. No more warnings. Inspector Ryan Ludlam mentioned that the situation has gotten serious enough to warrant this immediate action.
The city’s mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, is on board with this new approach. He’s determined to make the city centre a safer place for everyone. He’s also looking into a Public Spaces Protection Order to help tackle these ongoing issues. It’s all about making sure everyone can enjoy the city without the nuisance of reckless riders.
