A man claims E.ON entered his home without permission to check his electricity meter, raising concerns about privacy and security.
Waterlooville: So, there’s this guy, Alan Knight, who’s 67, and he’s pretty upset. He says E.ON, his energy supplier, just barged into his home while he was at work. They were checking his electricity meter, claiming they had a warrant.
Apparently, E.ON’s software thought someone had messed with the smart meter cover. But when they checked, they found nothing wrong. Alan was furious. He felt like they were accusing him of stealing gas and electricity. He even compared it to being burgled, which is a pretty big deal.
In a message from E.ON, they said their AI tech flagged the meter cover as possibly tampered with. They wanted to make sure everything was okay. But Alan wasn’t having it. He felt violated and stressed out by the whole situation.
E.ON did admit that their AI needs some tweaking to avoid these kinds of issues in the future. They said they first thought Alan’s gas meter might be faulty and needed to check it out. Even though the gas meter was outside, they insisted they had to go inside to safely uninstall it.
The company claimed they tried to set up a visit with Alan multiple times before getting a warrant. They said they always aim to find a time that works for their customers, but sometimes they have to do what they have to do.
In the end, E.ON apologized for any distress caused and said they’d cooperate with any investigation. It’s a wild story, and you can see why Alan is feeling so upset about it all.
