The DWP has announced Cold Weather Payments for 51 postcodes as temperatures drop
Bradford: The DWP just announced new Cold Weather Payments for folks in 51 postcode areas. About 95,000 households will get £25 to help with heating costs during this chilly spell.
These payments cover 45 areas in West Yorkshire, including Bradford, Halifax, and Huddersfield, and even reach parts of East Lancashire like Burnley. Plus, six more areas in North Yorkshire and County Durham are in on it too.
The payments kicked in after a week of freezing temperatures that started on January 4. If you’re curious about the specific postcodes, they include places like Rawtenstall, Bradford city center, and several areas in Halifax.
So far this winter, over 100,000 households have qualified for these payments. You can check if your postcode is eligible using their interactive map.
Earlier this winter, two payments totaling £50 were made to about 10,000 households in Cumbria and Northumberland. Northern Ireland also had a similar scheme, giving out a single £25 payment to eight postcode areas.
Cold Weather Payments are available for people in England and Wales who receive certain benefits. In Scotland, they have a different system that provides heating support every winter, regardless of the weather. Around 3.9 million people are eligible for these payments, with 1.2 million receiving Pension Credit.
Last year, there were 364,000 payments made across England and Wales, costing about £9.1 million. In some parts of Cumbria, payments were triggered multiple times during cold spells, adding up to £75 for eligible recipients.
If you receive benefits like Pension Credit, Income Support, or Universal Credit, you might be eligible for the Cold Weather Payment. But not everyone on these benefits will automatically get the payment, as there are specific criteria to meet.
