The DWP has clarified its stance on the Cost of Living payments, stating no plans for reintroduction despite ongoing financial pressures.
Wokingham: So, the Department for Work and Pensions has finally spoken up about those Cost of Living payments. You know, the ones that were meant to help folks struggling with rising costs? They were a lifeline for many, but it looks like they’re not coming back anytime soon.
These payments started back in 2022 and were designed to ease the financial strain on vulnerable households. Clive Jones, the MP for Wokingham, asked if the DWP would consider bringing them back. But the Labour minister, Sir Stephen Timms, made it clear that there are no plans to reintroduce them.
There were three types of these payments, each aimed at different groups. The Means-Tested Benefit Cost of Living Payment was for those on benefits like Universal Credit. They got a few payments throughout 2023 and into 2024, totaling up to £900.
Then there was the Disability Cost of Living Payment, which gave a one-off £150 to those on disability benefits. And let’s not forget the Pensioner Cost of Living Payments, which were added to the Winter Fuel Payment for older folks. It really helped boost their income during tough times.
It’s a bit of a bummer that these payments won’t be making a comeback, especially with so many people still feeling the pinch. Fingers crossed for some good news soon!
