Durham: The top officials at Durham Constabulary are excited about new funding. The Government announced a £100 million boost for neighbourhood policing today. This adds to another £100 million announced last December for England and Wales.

The goal is to have 13,000 more police officers on the streets by 2029. Downing Street emphasized that this funding aims for visible and accessible policing.

Police and Crime Commissioner Joy Allen mentioned that Durham Constabulary will receive £178 million. This is a 6.5% increase and is urgently needed. She has been advocating for more investment to strengthen local policing.

As of September 30, 2024, Durham Constabulary has 1,392 officers, which is a slight increase from last year. PCC Allen noted that the public wants to see more police officers who are visible and approachable.

She believes neighbourhood policing is essential for public confidence. The officers and volunteers in communities play a crucial role in solving local issues and preventing crime.

Chief Constable Rachel Bacon is optimistic that the new funding will help reduce crime and tackle anti-social behavior. She stated that neighbourhood teams are vital for addressing community concerns.

Visible policing may not seem flashy, but it works in the long run. Northumbria Police’s Commissioner also praised the funding, noting an increase to £421.1 million.

However, some forces, like Lincolnshire and Essex, expressed disappointment, citing funding shortfalls. Policing Minister Dame Diana Johnson acknowledged the challenges and mentioned that the Government is providing around £1 billion in additional funding starting in April.
